Editors Note: The article was written by John Rountree, Mission Zealot. Inspired by the Rountrees desire for European missions, the church participated in a Serve-a-thon to raise money.October 11, 2014 was an amazing day. After four months of planning, over 50 disciples from the Southern Connecticut Church of Christ came together for four hours in the pouring rain and transformed a long-neglected garden in front of a public school in Bridgeport, CT into a beautiful, professionally landscaped feature that the school and the community around it will take pride in for years to come.
In addition to the outside work, we took on inside projects as well, painting and helping organize books for their library.
What we were able to accomplish in such a short time was a miracle and a testament to the fact that God was fully behind this project.
No one complained about the rain. Everyone one had a great, selfless, "can do" attitude and we all worked together in teams with mutual respect and genuine love for each other.
The impact on the community was profound. Everyone that witnessed us working and having a great time in the rain were impressed. Many people outside our church expressed gratitude. At one point, a first grade teacher stopped everyone to thank us on behalf of the school. The principal, Brett Gustafson, was especially grateful.
Someone from the Board of Education stopped by and after seeing what we were doing, wrote us a personal check for $100 for our missions work.
In all, we raised over $5,000 for the International Missions Society from friends, family, neighbors and co-workers sponsoring us.
It was truly and amazing day that glorified God!
