Central New Jersey HS Senior Recognized for Excellence
This week ESPN honored 36 student athletes who not only excel in their sports but in academics and community service as well. On their list was HOPE worldwide volunteer Kendall Baldwin. Kendall is a volunteer in the Central New Jersey Chapter and has served on HOPE Youth Corps and as an AmeriCorps Intern with our summer programs. Kendall is a high school senior and plans to attend Harvard in the fall.

A Mother and Child's Reunion
Pinky was only 18-years old when she fell in love and married. After their daughter Niharika was born, she learned that her husband was already married to someone else. She decided she could not stay, however, unable to support her daughter Pinky had no choice but to leave Niharika with her husband. But, Pinky loved her daughter and made every effort to visit her frequently.
Looking for a Spanish-speaking physician to serve a non-profit foundation in Bolivia
Foundation Arco Iris (FAI) is a non-profit organization established in La Paz, Bolivia twenty years ago. FAI has two main divisions – the social programs and the hospital. The FAI social programs provide housing, food, clothing, schooling, and social services for over 300 orphans and helps care for the estimated 30,000 children who live or work in the streets of La Paz.

“Voluntourism” – Hearts to Serve
Tony Galiani and Mira Gloss are examples of those with a heart to serve. I have worked with them within the Duke Health System for many years. They have not only been colleagues, but friends. Tony and Mira wanted to see what HOPE worldwide Bolivia was doing in La Paz and wanted to help. They took a week of vacation to serve with us at Hospital Arco Iris (HAI) and the orphanages (Foundation Arco Iris).

“What does God expect of us?” Richard Stearns, author of the book The Hole in our Gospel, asks this thought provoking question. There are many ways we could answer this question, but Stearns asks us to consider the following expanded version of this question: Does God expect us to focus more on meeting the needs of the poor? Stearns tells of his own journey from living in the comforts of corporate America to working with orphaned children in Africa. His story and struggle ring true to many of us.

It is hard for us to imagine the emotional and physical pain many people endure each day. However, HOPE worldwide volunteers encounter hundreds living in the midst of the most painful poverty and disease daily. In Guatemala, we met Lizeth a very charming, intelligent and outgoing 11-year old despite the fact she was unloved by her mother and given to her aunt.

Yonel was gasping for breath. Sweating, unresponsive and his pulse was thready and blood pressure low. He was literally dying from an asthma attack in the waiting area of our medical outreach in Bodarie, Haiti. We were his only hope since the local clinic was closed today.
