Chronological Bible 13: The Divided Kingdom

We learned in the previous entry that, even though God had promised King David that his descendants would always rule Israel, Solomon's spiritual adultery prompted God to change his plan. Out of respect for David's heart, God didn't carry this out in Solomon's lifetime, but waited for the next heir. Once Rehoboam replaced his father on the throne, the stage was set for the prophecy (about the kingdom being torn out of the hands of David's ancestors) to be fulfilled.

Legacies of Faith 2: Continual Teachers

My name is Lory Demshar. I became a disciple in 1972. I was raised as a Catholic in a small town in Pennsylvania. After graduating from Penn State, I began teaching in Salisbury, Maryland where after a conversation about seeking God, a Physical Education teacher asked me to study the Bible. Growing up, I had heard of the Bible; in fact we had a large family Bible on our coffee table which we never read. The summer after I was baptized, I did not work, but instead spent the days reading the Bible from Genesis through to Revelation. I was absolutely enthralled by what I was reading and learning about God. Stories in the Word that we may associate with children or think of as simple Bible stories really deeply reveal God to us. It was at that time that I developed a deep conviction of our need to continually study the Bible and to teach it to others.

The Tender Years, by Geri Laing and Elizabeth Laing Thompson (Review)

There is a picture in my wedding album, dating back to the 1970s, of a beautiful, vivacious young woman with her sweet newborn baby. That was Geri Laing and her little daughter, Elizabeth. Even at that time, I knew that Geri was a woman to learn from and an example to follow. As time went by and I had my own children, I was fortunate enough to attend seminars and retreats and hear Geri’s precious nuggets of wisdom, particularly about raising children. So much of my own approach to mothering came from Geri’s teaching.

God is faithful as he has been since the beginning of times. It is interesting to know that the word faith/faithfulness (pertaining to God) appears in the Old Testament (apart from Psalms and Proverbs) less than 7 times (according to the NIV Study Bible).

Chronological Bible 11: David and The Psalms

This entry covers three days of reading and introduces us to Dr. F. LaGard Smith’s method of putting the Psalms in topical order (also included is A PRAYER FOR EXPECTANT MOTHERS). Imperfect as he was, David had a pure heart. Just as we have experienced his humility as we followed his life in the preceding entries, so we can witness David's humble "inner life" as we read, pray and sing his psalms.
