The International Church of Christ in Singapore reached an important milestone on Sunday, February 24, as the first two elders were appointed. Al and Gloria Baird from the Los Angeles church spearheaded the ceremony. It was a day to remember with over 1,500 disciples in attendance. In leading up to the appointment, Al spelled out that elders must have a strong walk with God, a marriage worth imitating, a strong family, and be wise and mature, tested by times and experience.
He added that elders are responsible for shepherding the church, maturing it, keeping it united and being peacemakers and overseers. The joyous event marks a new chapter in the history of CCC and is also very timely as the church celebrates its 25th anniversary of making God known as well as serving the community in Singapore and the region.
John Louis will serve as an elder/evangelist and Lee Teck Ming as a congregational elder. The appointment of John and Teck Ming as elders, together with their respective spouses Karen and Patrice as Elders' wives, is a first for Singapore and the South-East Asia Region of Churches (SEA Churches) composed of Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, Japan and Mongolia. Aside from their commendable spiritual maturity, the Louis and the Lees are known as great shepherds of God's people and for being examples in raising their family. They have also proven themselves in many walks of life, as all four have been in the full-time ministry for more than 25 years, are very involved with HOPE worldwide, and have experience in secular jobs and are well-respected in the secular counseling community.
On the day of the appointment, the CCC enjoyed an inspiring worship service with over 1500 in attendance. The building was filled to overflowing with members from the home congregation plus local visitors and those who had flown in from many countries around Asia. Mark & Nadine Templer shared some memories of their involvement with Singapore, and Nadine shared a moving story about how HOPE worldwide India and its programs have been a catalyst for change in helping the less fortunate find hope and a future. She also announced the upcoming Hope Youth Corps/Hope Volunteer Corps to be held outside of Chennai, India, during the Christmas holidays later this year. Gloria Baird, who has battled cancer for the past year, humbly encouraged everyone to not waste their sufferings as she shared during the communion. Guillermo Adame, elder for the San Diego Church of Christ, inspired the church with his sermon entitled, "Your Life Makes a Difference," reminding the Singapore disciples that they are special in God's eyes.
After John and Teck Ming were appointed, visiting fellow church leaders from the SEA Region shared their appreciation for both couples. Finally, John and Teck Ming thanked the church for their trust and support through the years. As elders of CCC, they pledged to continue to give their best serving the church in their lifetime. God’s plan is for elders to be raised up in each church as it matures. With a sense of excitement and anticipation, the CCC of Singapore is beginning its second quarter of a century with what may well be their finest hour!
